Evaluation question 7
Here the question was 'Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the final product'. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Here the question is 'How did you attract / address your audience'? I will look to explain things such as, if I did any audience research to help my thriller appeal to my target, and what is it about my thriller which attracts people.
To answer this question I used a range of techniques. The first thing I did was create a questionnaire earlier on in the development of my film, this helped me as it outline what to aim at such as, gender, sub genre, ages, and plot. Here is a link to the questionnaire and results.

However once my video had been made I decided to interview people with a variety of characteristics to see what made my film appeal to them. This then helped me to see what people actually like about my intro, and which areas of my film will actually attract the audience. Overall what I believe I found was that younger people are attract to action and tension, whereas more older people attract to the thriller characteristics and atmosphere. The question is 'Who would be the audience for your media product'. In this question I will look at what the ideal age, gender, class, and background of my target audience. In addition I will look at how my film would attract this target audience and how it will satisfy them. I personally believed that my ideal target audience would be young adults, male, from a reasonably developed country, and any country. I believed this for a number of reasons.
young adult - Usually the most views of a horror thriller are young adults, as young are too easily scared or not allowed, whereas it doesn't suit the taste of a lot of elderly people.
male- This is because males are stereotyped to be more 'manly' and therefore would be prepared to watch my film.
higher classes - This is because they have more disposable income to pay to watch my film as well as having the technology, etc.
Background - Any as there is no real target on background.
However to test my hypothesis out I did a small study by showing a range of 20 people my film, and then got them to fill out a questionnaire. The question asked were:
1 - How old are you?
2 - What gender are you?
3 - What class would you say you are part of?
4 - Where were you taught, and live?
5 - Would you watch this film?
However I will only the present the data from those who answered yes to 'would you watch this film'.
Here are the answers:

This shows that my prediction that most viewers will be young adults was correct.

This chart shows that my prediction for the gender was correct to, and that a majority would be male.

This chart does show that there is a wide range of classes which are prepared to view my film. However the most popular is the middle and upper class, due to them having more income to spend on entertainment, whereas the lower class do not.

There was a wide range of details on the backgrounds of participants, yet similarities included, education and culture.

Out of the 20 participants I asked to complete the questionnaire 5 would not want to see my film, the features of these people included being, female, and too young or old.
So how might I attract the target audience. Simple. Due to conducting the research onto the target audience we can see how to target them. I believe that TV advertising would be most useful as most of the target are from higher social classes so would own a TV, as well as almost everyone having one. Then we would target young adults, so therefore don't advertise it on channels or programmes which elder people watch such antiques roadshow. Moreover to attract males you could bias it towards the gender, such as slogans like 'the film any guy won't want to miss'.

In what way does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In my thriller intro it holds the main thriller sub-genre as psychological, however we can also see parts of action/crime, as there are certain violent scenes. The closest thriller film to which I could possibly compare this to is se7en, as both are similar in many was such as the book which has information of murders, however in my thriller intro it actually has acting of the owner of the book, whereas se7en only uses props.
In addition my media film challenges the conventions of a real product in many ways. One of the most important factors is the use of credits, I used a mixture of credits on a black screen and some over certain scenes. The use of credits on a black screen was to help build up suspense and tension because its a key factor of thriller films and a common convention, as well to help scene changed in the intro, and example of a thriller which used this is se7en.
Moreover in my thriller there is often dark, low key lighting used in tense scenes, I found this important as it kept the audience interested in whats happening; this is rather common and is used in many thrillers such as Shutter island.
One of the main points of our filming challenging the characteristics of the thriller is that we wanted it to be believable to a certain extent, and the fact that we did not have any adult actors meant we did not use any digetic sounds as the voices will be unrealistic, as well as the sound being to plain. Therefore I decided to make a music soundtrack to play over all the scenes. This was a non-digetic sound but added to the mystery of the film, which is often a common convention of thrillers.
Then common ways in which we used characteristics of real thriller films include the use of dark lighting, trying to keep the protagonist identity a secret, the protagonist has an aim, we often saw flash-backs/nightmares, and sometimes quick shot changes, which all help to build up suspension.
Overall if you had to compare my thriller intro to another, I would say its very similar to se7en, as it was the main inspiration to my thriller, and I tried to imitate many parts to it, such as the evil books, creepy body parts. However it challenged me to show more than just the build up of tension trough props, but also through acting and character interaction.
Finally I found that using the blog as another media product did actually really help me to produce my film as it lead me onto some great ideas, and would help to show how the final product came together to develop. I believe that they work very well together as the blogs can give updates on how well the film is coming together, and look at certain aspects. I believe that as there is such a large variety of blogs on the internet it can be similar to many already on the web which give updates on how things are coming along, such as someones daily routine even.
